Visualizing the electron’s quantization with a ruler

چکیده

Abstract More than 100 years ago, Robert Millikan demonstrated the quantization of electron using charged, falling droplets, but statistical analysis on many droplets did not allow a direct visualization charge. Instead letting fall, we have used optical levitation to create single droplet version Millikan’s experiment where effects removal can be observed by naked eye and measured with ruler. As added charges levitated droplet, that its equilibrium position jumped vertically in quantized steps. The discrete nature droplet’s jumps is consequence single-electron changes charge therefore clearly demonstrates steps were optically magnified onto wall filmed. We anticipate video these additions become straightforward demonstration for general audience.

Quantization of Hall Conductance For Interacting Electrons on a Torus

We consider interacting, charged spins on a torus described by a gapped Hamiltonian with a unique groundstate and conserved local charge. Using quasi-adiabatic evolution of the groundstate around a flux-torus, we prove, without any averaging assumption, that the Hall conductance of the groundstate is quantized in integer multiples of e/h, up to exponentially small corrections in the linear size...

Modelling the Golomb Ruler

The Golomb ruler problem has been proposed as a challenging constraint satisfaction problem. We consider a large number of di erent models of this problem, both binary and non-binary. The problem can be modelled using quaternary constraints, but in practice using a set of auxiliary variables and ternary constraints gives better results. A binary encoding of the problem gives a smaller search tr...

A single protein redox ruler.

Redox reactions are the heart of function in biological systems. Using a deceptively simple toolbox, consisting largely of first row transition metals and the 20 canonical amino acids, nature has evolved proteins that contain cofactors with reduction potentials (E°′) between +1 V and −1 V. Chemists have long known that ligands to transition metals markedly alter E°′ of the metal, often in a sys...

The Carpenter’s Ruler Folding Problem

A carpenter’s ruler is a ruler divided into pieces of different lengths which are hinged where the pieces meet, which makes it possible to fold the ruler. The carpenter’s ruler folding problem, originally posed by Hopcroft, Joseph and Whitesides, is to determine the smallest case (or interval on the line) into which the ruler fits when folded. The problem is known to be NP-complete. The best pr...
